The main function of the Society, which was founded in 1954, is to enable new and long-standing members to play chamber music together, at home or at concerts. Our constitution states the more general aim, to encourage the practice and performance of chamber music.
The monthly concerts are given by members and provide the opportunity to perform chamber music of their choice. Members are encouraged to offer a Committee member an item for one of the concerts listed in the diary. He or she is likely to be delighted! Members may be asked for an item, but with over 200 members, one may be overlooked.
On the other hand, there is no compulsion to perform. Members must not assume that they will sooner or later have to stand up in front of an audience. The monthly concert is an opportunity to perform an item which has already been rehearsed in members' homes - we like to feel that the concerts represent only the tip of the music-making iceberg.
The annual Spring and Summer Outings are probably the best occasions for meeting other members, perhaps playing with some 10 to 20 different people during 5 sessions throughout the day.
